Floating Car Data (FCD) is a revolutionary way of collecting “flow” information, using the real-time position and speed of vehicles as probes to measure the traffic flow. These real-time positions are collected anonymously by monitoring vehicles equipped with tracking devices based on GPS or with GPS smartphones.
Each of the vehicles acts as a real-time probe reporting traffic density. The FCD technology converts the anonymous GPS data into accurate, real-time, information on the speed and direction of cars traveling throughout the road network.
